Behind a season-high 14 shots, eight on goal, the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's soccer team defeated Concordia (Wis.) 2-0 Thursday night at Fiskum Field in Whitewater to improve to 2-1 this season. The Falcons fall to 0-2.
 
UW-W missed capitalizing on an early opportunity in the sixth minute when Anna Brodjian (Barrington, Ill./Barrington) collected a loose ball and passed it to Anna Boyd (De Pere, Wis./De Pere) in front of an open goal. Brodjian's pass was too high and Boyd could only get a shoulder on it, and the ensuing shot hit the crossbar.
 
Savannah Curtis (Lodi, Wis./Lodi) had another prime scoring opportunity after tracking down a ball on a breakaway in the 23rd minute, but Concordia keeper Olivia Kindt made a sprawling save to her right to keep the Warhawks off the scoreboard.
 
The Warhawks finally made the most of a scoring opportunity eight minutes into the second half. Brodjian slid a pass through the defense to Boyd who made a move on the keeper and punched the ball in the net for her first goal of the season and a 1-0 Warhawk lead.
 
Brodjian nearly made it 2-0 ten minutes later when she took control of a ball, pushed it through the backline of the Falcon defense, and fired a shot to the lower left corner of the goal, but Kindt made another diving stop.
                                               
UW-W narrowly missed another goal in the 74th minute when Anna Perona (Chicago, Ill./Loyola Academy)tracked down a bouncing ball, beat the keeper, but was denied by the right goal post.
 
Five minutes later Megan Glasbrenner (McFarland, Wis./McFarland) tallied her first collegiate point when she assisted Elli Wahlberg (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles North) to give UW-W a 2-0 lead.
 
Head Coach Ryan Quamme was especially proud of his team's second half performance, "The second half was the best attacking half we have played all season" he stated after the match.
 
Twenty-three players saw action for the Warhawks, but Quamme cited Brodjian and goalkeeper Nina Yonan (Skokie, Ill./Niles North) for their solid performances.
 
"Anna came into her own today. She's a talented attacking player, and Nina has had a great start to the season. She handled the field conditions very well."
 
Yonan finished with six saves and tallied her second shutout of the year.
 
Field conditions were saturated and slick as a result of the enormous amount of rain that hit Whitewater on Wednesday.
 
The Warhawks' next match is Saturday against Edgewood College at 11 a.m. at Fiskum Field. UW-W will honor their five seniors – Alyssa Lennon (Oshkosh, Wis./Oshkosh West), Kaci Schonert (Racine, Wis./Horlick), Mackenzie Serbousek (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Cedar Rapids Prairie), Lauren Otto (Richmond, Ill./Richmond Burton Community) and Payton DeLuga (Algonquin, Ill./Dundee Crown) – after the match.
