Second Half Surge Pushes Quinnipiac Past Ion
NEW ROCHELLE, NY – The Iona College men’s soccer had a pair of shots for off the crossbar in a hard fought 2-1 loss at Mazzella Field on Wednesday afternoon. Two second half goals by Quinnipiac proved to be the decisive moments as the Maroon & Gold fall to 1-4-0 in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play.
The lone score for Gaels came from sophomore Killian Colombie in the 44th minute. Junior Luis Mendoza send a grounded pass across the box and found Colombie standing on the right side who then drilled it into the left side of the net for his third score of the season.
Iona controlled the tempo throughout the first half, outshooting Quinnipiac 9-2. Sophomore Daniel Huertas had two shots on goal in the 10th and 15th minute that forced Bobcat goaltender, freshman Chrysostomos Iakovidis, to make pair of saves. Mendoza had a great chance that went off the crossbar in the 29th minute.
Quinnipiac got its first goal in the 56th minute when senior Ryan Scheiderman found the back of the net off a deflection in the box. The Gaels tried to answer with three corner kick chances in the following 15 minutes, but their push would be quelled in the 78th.
Following an Iona foul, Quinnipiac senior James Doig stepped up to take a dangerous free kick. He buried a curving shot in the nearside of the goal, giving the Bobcats the game-deciding tally.
The Gaels had a huge chance to tie the game in the closing minutes. In the 88th minute, sophomore Humbert Ferrer had the possible game-tying header go off the crossbar and out of play.
Senior Julian Petrello made four saves in his first start of the season. Mendoza led the Maroon & Gold with three shots on goal.
On homecoming, Saturday, Oct. 15, Iona welcomes the Canisius College Golden Griffs to Mazzella Field for a 3 PM MAAC tilt.
