Serbousek leads Warhawks past #21 Augustana
Freshman Mackenzie Serbousek (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Cedar Rapids Prairie) scored her first two collegiate goals to lead the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's soccer team past Augustana College, 3-1, Wednesday night at Fiskum Field in Whitewater.
The first half was scoreless but not uneventful. Augustana put some early pressure on the Warhawk defense and tested Erin Doody (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln Way Central) with a shot on goal in the 12th minute.
Jordan Jackson (Lake Zurich, Ill./Lake Zurich) put a shot on the Viking net in the 34th minute but Meredith Chew was there to make the stop.
The Warhawks saw a chance to make something happen with a corner kick in the final seconds of the half, but came up empty and went into halftime tied at zero.
Pace quickened in the second half as each team put a shot on goal in the first five minutes, but neither scored.
The Warhawks earned a corner kick in the 53rd minute that Carina Krausert (Delafield, Wis./Catholic Memorial) was elected to take. Krausert sent the ball into the box and Serbousek headed it in for a 1-0 lead. "We were very excited about Mackenzie since she committed to us last year. She is very good in the air" Head Coach Ryan Quamme commented after the game.
Three minutes and twenty-two seconds later Serbousek found herself in the right spot at the right time. Jenna Woodson (Menomonee Falls, Wis./Menomonee Falls) played a cross into the box that Carly Pottle (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles East) gathered and shot, but the ball hit the post and came right back to Serbousek. Serbousek put a foot on it and gave UW-W a 2-0 lead.
Augustana retaliated with a goal in the 72nd minute to make it 2-1, but the Warhawks would answer seven minutes later. A foul on the Vikings resulted in a free kick just outside of the 18-yard box. Jordan Jackson (Lake Zurich, Ill./Lake Zurich) struck a laser to the lower right corner of the goal for a 3-1 Warhawk lead. Quamme added, "Jordan is very capable in those situations. I actually talked to her about it in pregame a little bit; to be sure she stepped up when she got the opportunity."
The defense did the rest as the Warhawks went on to win and improve to 6-2 this season. Augustana falls to 7-2 with the loss.
Coming into Wednesday night's game the Vikings were averaging 27 shots and five goals a game. The Warhawks held them to 10 and one, respectively.
Next up for UW-Whitewater is a trip to UW-Stevens Point and the start of the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference schedule. The Warhawks are currently on a 29-game WIAC regular season win streak. The Pointers and Warhawks kickoff at 1 pm.
