Severe named PL Defensive Player of the Week
Complete Patriot League Release
BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Led by a strong performance against Temple, Lehigh women's soccer sophomore Clare Severe has been named Patriot League Defensive Player of the Week, as announced on Monday. Severe was part of the back line that earned its eighth straight shutout to begin the season while scoring the game-winning goal 8:19 into overtime.
Severe's goal extended Lehigh's unbeaten streak to eight games (a school record) and winning streak to seven games (to tie a school record). It marked her second-career goal, giving the Mountain Hawks their second overtime victory against Temple in as many years.
Severe is part of a defense which saw its shutout streak reach 832:31 (dating back to last season) before Colgate scored early in the first half Saturday. In total, the streak reached 758:34 to begin the season. Severe and the Mountain Hawks allowed just 11 shots and only four shots on goal against Temple.
In total, Severe's weekly award is the ninth won by a Lehigh student-athlete this season and second Defensive Player of the Week award (also won by junior Alyssa Riporti on Sept. 12).
The Mountain Hawks now return home for three straight games, beginning on Wednesday vs. Navy. Opening kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
