Shamburger Joins U.S. U-23 Roster
NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Vanderbilt freshman standout Ella Shamburger was called up to join the United States U-23 National Team as it heads to Spain next week for the 2019 Women’s International U-23 La Manga Tournament.
“It is really exciting and special to be asked to play for your country,” Shamburger said. “I feel like I’ve been given an incredible opportunity to represent Vanderbilt while playing overseas against some of the best competition in the world.”
The U.S. will face the U-23 squads from Sweden on April 5, France on April 7 and Italy on April 9. England and Norway will also participate in the six-country friendly competition, where every team will play three matches.
The U.S. U-23 WNT just finished its participation in the Thorns Spring Invitational in Portland, Oregon, where Haley Hopkins represented Vanderbilt. The team traveling to Spain is an entirely different roster, however.
Players born on or after Jan. 1, 1996, the age cut-off for this year’s U.S. U-23 WNT, are age-eligible for this competition. Shamburger is currently a member of the U.S. U-20 Women’s National Team player pool.
Shamburger is coming off an impressive freshman season where she was named to the All-SEC Freshman team, All-Southeast Region second team and the Top-Drawer Freshman second team.
She started all 21 games for the Commodores, leading a defense that only allowed 14 goals all season. She led the Commodores with 1,776 minutes played and also tallied three assists.
