Sheridan heads Patriots in right direction
FLORENCE, SC – Junior David Sheridan headed in a corner kick from junior Sven Ricke with 6:49 left in the second overtime period to give Francis Marion University a 3-2 from-from-behind victory over Anderson University, Wednesday night (Oct. 29) in non-conference men’s soccer action.
Francis Marion ups its overall record to 10-3-2, the program’s second consecutive season of double-digit wins. The loss evens Anderson’s mark at 8-8-0.
The Patriots will conclude their regular-season schedule and celebrate Senior Night on Saturday evening as they play host to long-time rival Lander University. Kick-off is slated for 7 p.m.
By virtue of other results in the Peach Belt Conference on Wednesday, FMU is guaranteed to host a first-round PBC Tournament match next Tuesday night on Hartzler Field.
Sheridan’s match-winner was the only shot attempted by either squad in the extra periods. It was his third score of the season and second game-winning tally. The assist for Ricke was his team-leading seventh of the season.
After a relatively uneventful first half – only two shots on goal – FMU freshman Jayden Doyle gave the Patriots a 1-0 lead in the 59th minute with a 10-yard score from a tight angle on the right side of the box. Graduate student Tom Gillette served the ball into the box where sophomore Shahin Hemat headed the ball out to Doyle.
Anderson responded with a pair of goals in a seven-minute span. Magnus Larsen scored on a 30-yard blast that deflected off a Patriot and the altered course allowed the ball to slip by FMU goalkeeper Mike Warn at the 63:08 mark. Andres Lozano put the Trojans up 2-1 with a one-touch, four-yard shot off a cross from Aaron Roberson in the 70th minute.
Ricke evened the score at 2-2 when he stole a pass in the Anderson defensive end, dribbled left, and then turned to his right and fired an 18-yard shot into the left corner of the Trojan goal.
Anderson threatened in the first overtime session, but another long cross from the right corner was safely bodied back to Warn by a Patriot defender.
Anderson led in shots 9-6, while Francis Marion doubled the Trojans in corner kicks 8-4. The six shots were a season low for the Patriots.
Most of the opening 45 minutes were played in a constant rain storm. Doyle nearly gave FMU a 1-0 lead in the 43rd minute, but his curling attempt from the far left side glanced off the crossbar and was cleared by the Anderson defense.
Warn finished with one save, while Anderson goalkeeper Bo Haug did not record a save.
