Sherwin's Overtime Goal Gives NAU 1-0 Win
FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – The Northern Arizona women’s soccer team faced Northern Colorado Friday night in its last Friday night match under the lights at Lumberjack Stadium this season. All five seniors, Alana D’Onofrio, Shawnee Morgan, Jordan Stenger, Elinor Priest and Lauren Weaver played in their last Friday night match at NAU. After grinding throughout the entire match, the Lumberjacks were able to get a late goal in overtime from sophomore midfielder Nicole Sherwin to give NAU the 1-0 win over Northern Colorado.
“Northern Colorado is such a talented team with some special players,” said head coach Andre Luciano. “Being the last Friday regular season game at home, we had to control our emotions and once the game settled down we did a great job of possessing the ball.”
Sherwin received a pass from junior midfielder Savannah Berry and Sherwin was able to get the ball over the Bears’ goalkeeper to send the Lumberjacks off with a win.
“Coach Luciano always tells me that he has a lot of confidence in me,” said Sherwin. “He tells me to stay focused and I have confidence going into the game and I know I can help the team whether it’s with an assist or a goal. Tonight it just happened to be a goal.”
That is Sherwin’s second goal of the season and also her second game-winning goal this season during Big Sky Conference play.
The game went into halftime 0-0 with very little action on offense. Both teams combined for five total shots with only one shot on goal from the Lumberjacks.
The offense picked up for the Lumberjacks in the second half as their shot total increased from three shots in the first half to seven in the second half. The Lumberjacks thought they had a goal in the second half from sophomore forward Haley Wingender but was called for offside.
With the 1-0 win, Weaver records her sixth shutout of the season and her 17th shutout in her career. This is the first overtime win this season at home for Northern Arizona.
All five seniors impacted the game to help bring a win home for the Lumberjacks. Stenger was instrumental in picking up Northern Arizona’s offensive attack.
“Jordan came into the game and fought and completely changed the game for us,” said Luciano. “She was the reason why we won the game.”
Stenger and the rest of the seniors will prepare for their final home match on Sunday against North Dakota. It will be senior day for D’Onofrio, Morgan, Stenger, Priest, Weaver and Shelby Foltz and will be honored before the start of Sunday’s match at 12 p.m.
