DENVER – On a 90 degree mid-September day, senior striker Andre Shinyashiki (Sao Paulo, Brazil) continued his hot-start to the 2018 season with his third hat trick in seven matches and his third-straight multi-goal game to lift the [5/4] University of Denver men’s soccer team past [22/-] San Francisco 3-0 on Sunday afternoon at the University of Denver Soccer Stadium.
Shinyashiki scored five goals in two matches in the final weekend of a four-match homestand to bring his season goal total to 13 in seven matches, the second-most in a single-season in Denver’s Division I history. The Denver skipper’s point total of 28 through seven matches is good for third in a single season in Denver’s DI history.
Sophomore holding mid Jacob Stensson (Stockholm, Sweden) played a corner kick to the top of the box in the 54th minute that was headed on target and found the back of the net for Shinyashiki’s 11th of the campaign.
The 35th goal of Shinyashiki’s career came in the 66th minute off build-up play down the left from outside back Jared Jungjohann (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) and winger Kenny Akamatsu (Niigata, Japan). Akamatsu got to the endline and cut it back to Shinyashiki, who took a touch to his right and finished it into the side netting of the back post.
Shinyashiki completed his third-career hat trick in the 76th minute, dribbling through three San Francisco defenders before looking up and placing it by the Dons’ netminder for career goal number 36.
The Pioneers outshot the Dons 20-9, putting seven of their 20 chances on target. Denver took six of the match’s nine corner kicks.
Denver improved to 51-3-3 at home in its last 57 matches at the University of Denver Soccer Stadium.
