Siena Scores 6-0 Season-Opening Rout of Iona
LOUDONVILLE, NY – Eager to finally play their first match in 512 days, Siena Women’s Soccer didn’t hold anything back. Following a pair of COVID-19 related pauses which further delayed the start to their unique spring season, the Saints more than made the most of their 2021 opener by erupting for five first half goals en route to a 6-0 rout of Iona at Hickey Field.
Siena (1-0) scored three times within the first nine minutes as they cruised to the most lopsided season-opening victory in the program’s 41 seasons. The six total goals scored also marked the program’s most in six years since a 7-0 home triumph over Saint Peter’s on Sept. 19, 2015.
Juniors Emily McNelis and Carrie Krohn each registered a pair of first half goals for the Saints who have won eight straight over Iona (0-2-1). McNelis added an assist to finish with both a match and career-high five points, while Krohn also set a career-high with four points on the strength of her first collegiate multi-goal effort.
Krohn opened the scoring in the sixth minute, igniting a three-goal run spanning just 3:37. Siena capped the spurt by scoring on consecutive corners fed in by senior captain Deanna Lomino who finished with three assists.
Senior Rachel Sullivan scored the second goal while McNelis followed with consecutive tallies. Krohn capped the first half barrage with her second goal in the 31st minute as the floodgates were wide open.
Senior Jayanna Monds scored the final goal in the 72nd minute as the Saints took to the turf well in just their third-ever match on Hickey Field, and first in eight years. Monds dished out a pair of assists to also finish with a career-high four points. Overall, Siena tallied eight assists as a team, with Brianna Montinard and Ashleigh Sarafin each adding a helper.
Junior keeper Leslie Adams made six saves in her collegiate debut to finish off the clean sheet for the Saints who looked far from a team predicted to finish eighth this spring according to the MAAC Preseason Poll.
Siena now has a quick turnaround as it prepares to return to action Saturday. The Saints are set to host Canisius at 4 p.m. at Hickey Field in a matchup to be broadcast on ESPN3.
