Siena Secures Key MAAC Victory
Senior captain Allison Clark scored her second career goal – and second in as many matches – to lead Siena Soccer to a key 1-0 win at Iona Saturday. Classmate Liz Rogan made three saves to record her fifth shutout of the fall.
Clark, who was making her second consecutive start at striker after playing outside back exclusively for her first three and a half years, scored the decisive tally just 1:49 into the second half. She corralled the ball off a deflected pass and raced down the field to score.
The 47th minute goal would be all that Siena (7-6-3, 3-4-1) would need in a dominant effort as the Saints picked up an important three points in their continuing quest to secure one of the six available MAAC Tournament berths.
Siena out-shot Iona (2-14, 1-6) 23-5, while harboring a 5-3 margin in corners. It marked the fourth time in the past eight matches in which the Saints’ stalwart defense held their opponent to exactly five shots as Siena tallied its sixth team clean sheet of the fall.
Taylor Rice made six saves in a losing effort for the Gaels.
The Saints return to Siena Field Wednesday for another important MAAC battle when they host rival Marist in the regular season home finale at 3 p.m.
