Siena Takes Down Iona Women's Soccer, 1-0
LOUDONVILLE, NY – For the second straight game, the Iona College women's soccer team fell by one goal to a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference foe. The Siena Saints defending home field with a 1-0 victory against the Gales on Saturday afternoon.
GAME SUMMARY
The Maroon & Gold were on their heels from the get-go against the Saints. Siena outshot Iona 25-6 and that included a 10-1 shot discrepancy in the second half. The Gaels had one corner kick compared to eight for the Saints.
Junior Amber Crispin had two of Iona's three shots on goal coming off the bench. Junior Ciara Guglielmo had one shot on goal starting in the midfield.
Iona's rookie keeper Emma Havrilla felt immediate pressure in the opening minutes. She had to make a pair of saves on Meghan Riccardi in the first three minutes. Havrilla would go on to make six of her seven first half saves in the opening 22:15 of the contest.
Guglielmo had the Gaels first shot on goal in the 36'. The most dangerous attack for the Gaels came in the 43' with Crispin making a charge. She forced Siena goalie Taylor Dorado to make a save and then had a second attempt go wide.
In the 53', Riccardi gave the Saints the only goal they'd need. Her second goal of the season was assisted by Emily McNelis.
Crispin had both of Iona's best attempts to tie the game in the second half. She had a shot on goal in the 59'.
BY THE NUMBERS
- Seven different Siena players had at least one shot on goal.
- Havrilla's 11 saves is a new career-best. Her 25 shots faced is also a career-high.
- Saturday's 19 shots discrepancy is a season-high for Iona. It's six shots recorded is its lowest since a 2-1 loss at home to the Marist Red Foxes on Sept. 22.
- Iona has not had the corner kick opportunity advantage in any game this season. The difference of seven matches that of last game against Rider (Oct. 3).
UP NEXT
The Gaels will look to end their winless streak on Wednesday, Oct. 10 at home against the Fairfield Stags. The game is being broadcasted on ESPN3 and is set to begin at 3 p.m.
