Siena Wins MAAC Regular Season Championship
LOUDONVILLE, NY – For the first time in program history, Siena Women’s Soccer is the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Regular Season Champions. The top-seeded Saints are slated to begin their quest for a third MAAC Tournament Championship when they host a quarterfinal round matchup Friday. Siena's opponent, match time, and broadcast information will be confirmed Wednesday.
“I’m extremely proud of the commitment and sacrifice that everyone on our team has made to follow all of the protocols during this unusual season,” said head coach Steve Karbowski. “It has been a challenging year, and this is a great accomplishment for the team to head into the MAAC Tournament as the top seed.”
Siena (4-0-1), which joined the MAAC for women’s soccer in 1992, captures its first regular season championship in the program’s 29th season of conference competition. The Saints, who won MAAC Tournament Championships in both 2010 and 2015, previously finished as high as second in the conference regular season standings on three prior occasions (2004, 2009, 2016).
Siena completed an undefeated unprecedented marathon regular season featuring five matches in the span of just 10 days. Predicted to finish eighth according to the MAAC Preseason Coaches’ Poll, the Saints have outscored their opponents by a 13-2 margin during their unique spring season.
Siena, which has already matched its win total from the entirety of the program’s most recent 19-match 2019 season, entered today ranked second nationally in assists per match (3.20), sixth in points per match (8.40), seventh in save percentage (.933), 10th in scoring offense (2.60), and 18th in goals against average (0.38).
