Siena Women's Soccer Drops Season Opener
USAF ACADEMY, CO – Alex Giggie and Lexi Romero scored as Air Force grounded Siena Women’s Soccer 2-0 in the season-opener for both teams at Cadet Soccer Stadium. Taylor Dorado made five saves in goal for the Saints.
Air Force held a 16-8 advantage in shots and a 5-0 margin in corners in a physical affair. The teams combined for 31 fouls – 20 of which were whistled on the Falcons – and five yellow cards.
Siena seemingly struck for a quick 1-0 lead roughly five minutes into the contest, but a delayed foul call waived off the goal. Sophia Dimkopoulos, Emily McNelis, and Jayanna Monds paced the offense with two shots apiece in the match for the Saints which suffered their first season-opening loss in five years.
Giggie staked Air Force to a 1-0 lead in the 20th minute when she blasted a free kick across inside the far top left post from 25 yards out. Romero then struck just under two minutes before the half to push the advantage to a pair.
Danielle Katz made three saves to record the shutout for the Falcons which are opening their season with five consecutive home matches.
Siena concludes its Colorado swing Sunday when they make the short trip to Colorado Springs to take on another Mountain West opponent in Colorado College. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. ET (11 a.m. local time).
