SIUE Takes Down #11 Loyola on Senior Night
EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. October 29, 2016– SIUE men's soccer extended its unbeaten streak to nine games Saturday, knocking off No. 11 Loyola 1-0 Saturday at Korte Stadium.
SIUE improved to 8-4-4 overall and 4-1-2 in MVC play. Loyola dropped to 12-2-1 overall and 5-1-1 in Valley play. The win moved the Cougars within two points of the top spot in the Valley with one game remaining.
"The most important thing is to get better," SIUE Head Coach Mario Sanchez said. "For our quest to get the NCAA Tournament, we have to get better every day. I thought this was another opportunity for us. The guys responded really well after a long week."
Devyn Jambga scored the lone goal of the game, striking in the 57th minute after a feed from Lachlan McLean. Jambga broke free when Loyola defender Ryan Howe lost his footing, leaving the Cougar striker one-on-one with goalkeeper Andrew Chekadanov. Jambga slid a low shot to the far post for the game-winner.
"Lachlan and Devyn did great," Sanchez said. "Devyn obviously scored a beautiful goal."
Loyola outshot SIUE for the game 11-6, but managed just two shots on goal. SIUE goalkeeper Kyle Dal Santo made two saves and recorded his seventh shutout of the year and 18th of his career. Dal Santo now sits sixth on SIUE's all-time list.
The team recognized seniors Andrew Kendall-Moullin, Austin Ledbetter, Jason Hackett and Ivan Gutierrez prior to the game, which was the final home game for SIUE.
"You always went to send them out like that," Sanchez said. "At the same time, you want to send them out in a couple of months. We don't want this to end. We want to recognize them for what they have done, but we have a lot of soccer in us."
SIUE finishes the regular season with a 7 p.m. game Saturday at Evansville.
