Sobers-Assue Named ASUN Player of the Week
LAKEPOINT, Ga. – Following a four-goal week in which he tallied both game-winners, FGCU men’s soccer forward Arion Sobers-Assue has been named the ASUN Conference Player of the Week, as announced by league officials Monday.
Sobers-Assue (Miami, Fla./DeMatha Catholic HS) recorded the program’s third-ever hat trick – and second in three days – on Tuesday as part of a 5-1 FGCU win over FAU and tallied another goal in the Eagles’ 4-1 victory against NJIT on Saturday to win their sixth-straight game and move to 6-2-1 on the year.
After missing all of last season recovering from knee surgery, Sobers-Assue scored his first goal of the night on Tuesday in the 31st minute off a rebound. The ball bounded directly to the redshirt sophomore, who easily one-timed his shot into an open net. His second of the evening came just minutes later as the striker used an arsenal of moves to beat a pair of defenders and send a bullet of a shot from about 15 yards out into the top left corner of the net in the 34th minute. After FAU had trimmed the Eagles’ lead to 3-1, Sobers-Assue had the response in the 61st minute again off a rebound as he took a couple touches and then finished his hat trick into the far-left netting.
His offensive assault continued Saturday in the 20th minute to put the Eagles up 2-0 and serve as the ultimate game-winning goal. Following a square pass in the box from Dylan Sacramento (Winnipeg, Manitoba/York University/Bill Crothers S.S.), Sobers-Assue buried a shot to the left of NJIT keeper Victor Pujades – the ASUN’s leader in save percentage (.824) entering the match.
Sobers-Assue now ranks 2nd in the ASUN this year in goals (six) and points (13) behind only teammate Albert Ruiz (Barcelona, Spain/ CE L’Hospitalet/UE Cornella) with eight and 19, respectively. Sobers-Assue’s six goals are already tied for 6th in program single-season history (Ruiz has the mark of eight this year), and his 13 points are tied for 10th, with Ruiz also already possessing that record (19) this year as well.
The ASUN Player of the Week honor is the first of Sobers-Assue’s career, and he is the second FGCU member to earn the award in as many weeks as Ruiz claimed it last Monday. It’s just the third time in program history that FGCU has won ASUN Player of the Week honors in consecutive weeks, with the other occurrences coming in 2013 (Felipe DeSousa and Henry Penagos) and 2010 (Deion Jones and Scott Harrison). Additionally, earlier on Monday, Sobers-Assue was named to the College Soccer News National Team of the Week.
Sobers-Assue is part of a lethal FGCU offense which leads the nation in goals this year with 25 – one ahead of 2nd-place Vermont – and points with 70 – one ahead of 2nd-place Buffalo. The Eagles’ six-game winning streak is tied for the 3rd-longest in the nation, just one behind the pace of seven in a row set by Loyola Chicago and Butler.
With its season-opening ASUN win over NJIT, FGCU now owns a dominant 37-4-4 record in all ASUN regular-season games since the start of the 2010 season. All four of those losses have come on the road, and out of a possible 135 points that could have been earned in that time, the Eagles have claimed an impressive 115 of them (85.2 percent) en route to an unprecedented six-straight ASUN regular-season titles.
The Eagles have remained in the New York City area following the match with NJIT and will play Rutgers on Tuesday, Sept. 27, at 7:30 p.m. The Scarlett Knights are 0-6-1 on the year following a 0-0 double-overtime tie at home against Indiana Friday night.
