Soccer drops 1-0 decision at TCU
A goal from Kelly Johnson at 17:26 was enough to lift TCU to a 1-0 victory over Texas on Sunday afternoon. Johnson took a pass from Ashley Jones, maneuvered to the left side of the 18-yard box and put the ball over the outstretched arm of Longhorns' freshman goalkeeper Abby Smith and into the upper left corner.
Despite the setback, the Longhorns (7-9-1, 4-3-0 Big 12) will go into Friday's regular-season finale with four Big 12 Conference wins, their most since 2008.
UT had the first scoring opportunity, in the sixth minute with a corner kick. Junior Gabby Zarnegar sent in the serve, sophomore Brooke Gilbert got a head on it, but the attempt went wide. TCU countered with a shot from Serena Smith-Banas at 9:08 that Smith saved. The Horned Frogs' Bobbi Clemmer sent in a corner kick at 9:29, but Sarah Schweiss' attempt missed high.
TCU (6-8-3, 1-4-2 Big 12) tallied the lone goal in the 18th minute from Johnson. Texas tried to answer at 19:11 when sophomore Sharis Lachappelle got a head on another Zarnegar serve off a corner kick, but the attempt went wide. The Horned Frogs took two more shots in the 22nd minute, but Schweiss' was blocked and Monica Alvarado's missed wide.
An offsides call on TCU at 27:07 gave UT a free kick taken by Smith. Freshman midfielder Lindsey Meyer got a head the ball, but TCU goalkeeper Vittoria Arnold came up with the stop to keep it a one-goal lead for the hosts.
UT senior Kristin Cummins registered the final Longhorns' shot of the opening stanza at 43:04, when it missed wide. The Horned Frogs recorded a pair of shots in the final two minutes, both blocked, with the first by Lindsy Shafer at 43:51 and the final by Johnson at 44:27.
To begin the second half, senior Hannah Higgins fired the first shot at 47:50, but it was blocked. The teams exchanged wide shots in the 52nd and 55th minutes before TCU had another chance to make it a two-goal lead, at 57:36. Carly Bowen took a cross in front of Smith and fired, but Gilbert blocked the shot.
Both teams were then held without a shot until the 67th minute, when Texas received a corner kick. Higgins sent in the serve and freshman Kelsey Shimmick took a shot from the right side of the 18-yard box toward Arnold. The TCU back line stepped in front and made the save, sending the ball out to Gilbert, who took another shot the Horned Frogs stopped.
Lachappelle fired at 74:50 but it went high and over the net. UT began its final push in the 82nd minute when Shimmick took a shot from the right side of the 18-yard box that was saved by a leaping Arnold. A corner kick resulted and Higgins' serve was headed wide by Lachappelle. Another UT corner, this one in the 84th minute, ended with a header from Meyer that also missed wide.
Shimmick took the final two Longhorns' shots. The first at 88:46 was a header that missed wide and the final was blocked at 89:30, preserving the TCU shutout.
