Soccer falls 5-0 at BYU
PROVO, Utah -- Five second-half goals from BYU, including two from Michelle Murphy and the match's initial score by Dana Oldroyd Cusick at 53:49, lifted the Cougars to a 5-0 victory over Texas on Thursday evening inside South Stadium. Despite the loss, Longhorns' goalkeeper Ava Vogel matched her career high with eight saves.
The Cougars (5-1-0) registered the first shot of the match just four minutes in as Carlee Payne Holmoe fired two attempts on goal. The first was kicked away from the front of the net by Texas freshman defender Ali Schmalz and the second was blocked out of bounds. Nearly three minutes later, Oldroyd Cusick hit the crossbar, keeping it a scoreless contest. Ten minutes into the match, the Cougars hit the crossbar again, this time on an attempt by Jaiden Thornock.
Texas responded in the 12th minute with a pair of shots by freshman midfielder Lindsey Meyer following a corner kick by sophomore Sharis Lachappelle. Meyer's first attempt was headed toward the net and blocked and the second was also blocked.
Neither team registered another quality scoring attempt until the 31st and 32nd minute, when four BYU corner kicks resulted in two close-range shots for the Cougars. Cloee Colohan forced Vogel to make the save and Lindsi Lisonbee Cutshall's header went just high.
In the final eight minutes of the first half, BYU took three more shots, but none got past Vogel.
Just three minutes into the second half, the Cougars' Murphy took a shot from close range, but Vogel dove to her right, stretched out and made the save.
It was Oldroyd Cusick's strike from nearly 35 yards away that eventually broke the scoreless tie. Rachel Manning was credited with the assist on the play as Oldroyd Cusick's shot from the right side lofted over Vogel's outstretched hands and into the upper left corner of the net.
The Cougars struck again at the 65:01 mark as Murphy was able to push the attempt past Vogel for the two-goal advantage. Murphy's goal landed in nearly the same spot as Oldroyd Cusick's, over the hands of Vogel and into the upper left side of the net. Murphy added her second score of the evening at 69:54 on a give-and-go with Payne Holmoe.
Payne Holmoe then registered the fourth tally of the contest at 72:53 as Murphy recorded the assist on the score. Murphy corralled the loose ball in the box and passed it to Payne Holmoe, who shot it into the upper right side of the goal, past Vogel.
Texas sophomore Allison Smith registered both the team's second-half shots at 77:52 and 84:57, but BYU goalkeepers Erica Owens and Hilary Smith made the saves.
BYU recorded the final tally at 85:29 as Lisonbee Cutshall found the back of the net on a free kick from the far left side.
