Soccer Plays to 1-1 Draw at CSUN
NORTHRIDGE, Calif. --- The Fresno State soccer team played to a 1-1 come from behind draw Sunday afternoon against CSU Northridge at the Matador Soccer Field. Sophomore goalkeeper Katie DeVault tied the school record for saves in a single game for a second time in two consecutive games.
In the first half, the Bulldogs were forced to play more on the defensive side of the ball with the Matadors recording 14 shots compared to the 'Dogs six shots. Sophomore Katie DeVault picked up right where she left off on Friday night as she made four saves in the first 45 minutes.
Fresno State had the best opportunity to score just seconds before the horn sounded for halftime. Sophomore Emily Duff took a corner kick and both junior Kayla Kret and freshman Sam Brechmann had scoring opportunities, but neither was able to put the ball in the back of the net.
Coming out of halftime, the Matadors were the first to get on the scoreboard. Senior Melissa Fernandez got the ball past the keeper in 52 minute for her first goal of the season.
The Bulldogs turned up the pressure after going down 1-0. The 'Dogs pushed the pace and played three forwards out in front. In the 74 minute, junior Lauren Lindstrom tied the score at 1-1 as she found the back of the net off a corner kick from Shonice Myers for her first goal of the season.
With less than 6 minutes left, DeVault made two critical diving saves to preserve the 1-1 tie. At the end of regulation DeVault had 10 saves.
In the first overtime period, the Matadors had four shots and DeVault came up with another big save. The 'Dogs were only able to get one shot off in the first overtime.
After no score in the first overtime, the game went to a second ten minute overtime period. In the second overtime CSU Northridge had seven shots and only allowed Fresno State one. For the second time in two games, DeVault tied the school record for saves in a single game with 12.
Neither team was able to convert in the overtime periods and the game ended in a 1-1 draw.
Fresno State will next travel to the University of Washington for the UW Tournament over Labor Day weekend. The 'Dogs will face Portland on Friday at 4:30 p.m. and Washington on Sunday at 1:30 p.m.
