Soccer Ties St. Francis, 2-2
MOREHEAD, Ky. -- The Morehead State soccer team took 22 shots and 10 corner kicks on Sunday afternoon at Jayne Stadium, but settled for a 2-2 tie against non-conference foe St. Francis (Pa.).
The Eagles move to 0-4-1 on the season, while the Red Flash are now 1-3-1.
“It was pretty obvious today that we’re not where we need to be from a fitness standpoint,” Head Coach Warren Lipka said. “Playing two matches in three days is tough both mentally and physically, but we need to push through that. Everyone is facing the same type of schedule as us, and that’s what we’ll be up against most weekends when we get into Ohio Valley Conference play.”
The teams traded goals throughout the contest. Sophomore defender Macy Cobb put the Eagles on the scoreboard in the 43rd minute off a corner kick from freshman midfielder Macy Kootz.
Morehead State held a 1-0 advantage at halftime. The Eagles posted advantages of 8-4 in shots, 4-2 in shots on goal and 6-1 in corner kicks through the first 45 minutes.
St. Francis found the scoring column in the 58th minute when freshman forward Brittany Hasson connected off an assist from junior forward Barbara Maros de Carvalho.
The Eagles responded less than a minute later when sophomore midfielder Caity Fox lofted a shot into the net from 30 yards out.
The Red Flash answered in the 77th minute when junior forward Tesa McKibben drilled one home from 10 yards out off an assist from sophomore midfielder Eloa Nascimento.
McKibben took a match-high nine shots for St. Francis, while Fox led Morehead State with six attempts. Eighteen different players – 11 for MSU and seven for SFU – took shots in the affair.
Red Flash senior goalkeeper Brianna Butcher was credited with eight saves in the match, while Eagles freshman keeper Elizabeth Floyd registered four stops.
“Elizabeth was the player of the match for us,” Lipka added. “She came up with some great saves and helped direct the positioning of our defensive players.”
Morehead State continues its three-match home stand on Friday when Conference USA foe Marshall visits Jayne Stadium at 7 p.m. ET. Live stats will be available on MSUEagles.com.
