Spivey Nets Game-Winner In Shutout Of Miami
CORAL GABLES, Fla. - Sophomore Ashley Spivey scored the game’s lone goal in the 56th minute was the difference as the University of Maryland women’s soccer team pulled out its first-ever win at Miami Thursday night at Cobb Stadium.
The Terrapins move to 8-7-0 for the season and are now 4-5-0 in ACC play. The loss drops the Hurricanes to 8-6-0 overall and 3-6-0 in the conference.
“Great win on the road tonight for our group,” said Maryland head coach Jonathan Morgan. “I'm very pleased with the way we took care of the ball in our possession and I'm especially pleased with our team defending. We did a good job of keeping the ball in front of us and not allowing Miami a clean look at the goal through the run of play.”
The first half was played close to the vest by both squads unable to get a shot on goal.
Maryland had the only real threat in the first 45 minutes of play when a deflected ball off of a corner kick by seniorMegan Gibbons went off of the post in the eighth minute.
The game turned in the 56th minute when Gibbons played a long cross from deep on the right side to the far post. That’s where Spivey got on the end of it and neatly tucked it into the Hurricane net for her fifth goal of the season.
Sophomore keeper Rachelle Beanlands earned her fourth full shutout of the season. She didn’t face a shot on goal until the 89th minute thanks to a tremendous combined defensive effort by Gibbons, redshirt sophomore Amanda Gerlitz and sophomores Shannon Collins, Sarah Fichtner, Sarah Molina and Erika Nelson.
“We'll rest up tonight and fly out in the morning to head to Florida State,” said Morgan. “Our focus now is about preparing for another important contest against another good opponent.
Maryland finishes up its two-game swing through the Sunshine State on Sunday, Oct. 20 at No. 3 Florida State. The Terps and the Seminoles are scheduled for a 1 p.m. start at the Seminole Soccer Complex. The match will be streamed live on ESPN3.com.
