St. Aubin's Golden Goal Lifts Tech Over MU
October 22, 2012
For Immediate Release
Fort Wayne, Ind. – Freshman Zach St. Aubin (Manteno, IL/Bishop McNamara) scored his second goal of the match just over three minutes into overtime to push the Indiana Tech men’s soccer team to a 2-1 victory over conference rival Madonna University on a wet and rainy Monday night.
Madonna (6-8-1, 2-5-1 WHAC) lit up the scoreboard first on Dane Laird’s goal in the 22nd minute. Laird stole the ball away from the Warriors and was all alone with Tech keeper Reece Richardson (Halifax, England/Ryburn Valley). Richardson made the initial stop but the ball bounced away and Laird was able to recover and put the ball into the open net.
It didn’t take long for the Warriors to get the equalizer though. A Crusader foul set up a free kick for sophomore Padraic Ormsby (Wicklow, Ireland/Peninsula) 25 yards out. Ormsby, who’s been dangerous from that range all year, blasted a shot off the crossbar and the rebound found the head of St. Aubin who buried it into the back of the net to tie the game 1-1 at the 32:04 mark.
With the score still tied late in the match, Madonna nearly scored the go-ahead goal in the 84th minute when a free kick from MU’s Laird banged off the post and out of play. That would be the last chance for either side in regulation, and the game would move to overtime.
In the extra period, as the rain began to fall harder, sophomore Jammar Allison (Brampton, Ont./Davis & Elkins) brought the ball down the left sideline and served a beautiful cross to the backside of the goal where St. Aubin was left unmarked and headed home the game-winning goal, giving the Warriors their first win over Madonna since 2009.
Richardson, the WHAC Defensive Player of the Week, had another solid night in goal for Tech making five saves.
Indiana Tech finished with a slight edge in shots with 13 compared to MU’s 12 while the Crusaders had an 8-6 advantage in corner kicks.
The Warriors (9-4-2, 5-1-2 WHAC) are back in action on Wednesday, Oct. 24 at Lawrence Tech before returning home for the regular season finale on Saturday, Oct. 27 against Cornerstone University beginning at 3 p.m.
