St. Cloud State drops close match vs. #6 MSU
The St. Cloud State University soccer team (7-5-3, 6-4-3 NSIC) provided a top challenge for #6 nationally ranked Minnesota State University, Mankato (14-1-1, 12-0-1 NSIC) but came out on the losing end of a 3-2 decision on Sunday, Oct. 25 in Mankato, Minn.
The Huskies jumped out to an early lead in the contest against the league leading Mavericks with a goal by freshman forward Maria Kass at 18:15. This was Kass' team-leading eighth goal of the season and the solo assist on the play was set by fresman Kelli Santo Paulo. The goal gave the Huskies a 1-0 lead in the game at MSU.
The Mavericks knotted the score at 1-1 with a goal by Korey Kronforst at 30:34. The score ended the first half scoring for both squads at 1-1.
In the second half, the Huskies continued their aggressive attack and went up 2-1 with a goal by Sarah Benhart at 58:23. This was Benhart's first goal of the season and her first goal in her two-year career with the Huskies.
The Huskies held the one-goal lead untl 69:12 of the game when MSU's Julia Zach tied the game at 2-2. The Mavericks gained the lead with the game-winning goal at 71:27 with Kronforst's second goal of the contest that made the final 3-2.
On the day, MSU outshot the Huskies 16-13. Senior netminder Brittany Plombon made four saves in the loss for SCSU, while Lauren Hoeppner had five saves for MSU.
The Huskies will return to action at Husky Stadium for the final regular season home game of the year on Friday, Oct. 30 against Bemidji State University. The game will start at 7 p.m. and tickets are available at the gate.
