St. Cloud State Soccer tips MTU, 1-0
ST. CLOUD—Junior forward/midfielder Kylie Cleary's conversion from the penalty spot proved decisive for the St. Cloud State soccer team (2-0-0, 0-0-0 NSIC) on Sunday in a 1-0 win over Michigan Tech (1-1-0, 0-0-0 GLIAC) on a steamy afternoon at Husky Stadium.
The win capped a perfect opening weekend for the Huskies, who are undefeated through their first two games of the season for the first time since 2013. The triumph is also the program's first-ever over MTU in a series that dates back to 2014.
After a strong start saw SCSU chart the game's first five shots, the Huskies' attack broke through in the 24th minute. After a Michigan Tech foul inside the penalty area, Cleary stepped up to the spot and tucked her penalty kick into the low left corner of the net just past the reach of the Tech goalkeeper.
On an afternoon where temperatures hovered in the low to mid-80s, St. Cloud State's depth in the midfield proved vital in sealing the win after Cleary's second career goal put it ahead, 1-0. The Huskies were able to dictate possession throughout the contest, generating 12 shots to MTU's three and keeping the ball out of dangerous areas.
"We moved the ball well and were able to wear them down," junior midfielder Maria Witte said. "Everyone on the bench made a huge impact today."
Sophomore goalkeeper Kelsey Christian made her first career start between the sticks and notched one save to keep the clean sheet.
Up next for St. Cloud State is a non-conference tilt against Central Missouri on Friday, September 8. Kick off for that contest is scheduled for 7 p.m. Tickets will be available at the Husky Stadium box office on game day. SCSU students with a valid university ID will receive free admission.
