St. Francis Brooklyn Beats Lafayette In 2OT
Easton, PA - - -St. Francis Brooklyn sophomore midfielder Djiby Sarr scored an unassited goal late in the second overtime to give the Terriers a 1-0 victory against the Lafayette Leopards, in the season-opener.for both squads on Friday evening at Oaks Stadium.
Sarr, playing in his first career game as a Terrier, hustled his way down the right side, cut towards the corner of the box to create space, and finished with just 4:41 remaining in the second overtime to lift the Terriers to the thrilling victory. His shot was a perfectly placed bender that whistled past Leopards' keeper Brad Seeber and into the far corner of the net.
The winning goal followed an excellent chance from Leopards' Josh Kruczek, who hit the underside of the crossbar and watched his attempt bounce out of the net.
Terriers' keeper Seth Erdman was the hero just minutes earlier as he stopped a penalty shot in the 104th minute. After Leopards' captain Ryan Egan was taken down in the box, he stepped up and fired a low shot toward the right post that was brilliantly stopped by Erdman over the end line.
Erdman made five saves to record the victory for the Red & Blue.
Shots were even at ten in the defensive struggle and St. Francis Brooklyn attempted six corners compared to five by the Leopards.
The game began slowly as neither team was able to get loose for a shot until the 17th minute when Sarr sent a dribbler outside Seeber's right post.
Yussuf Olajide took a team-high three shots for the Terriers. Olajide had a solid chance late in the 87th minute but his one-time shot sailed just over the bar and the game went into extra time.
St. Francis Brooklyn will next play Rhode island on Wednesday, August 31st in their home-opener at Brooklyn Bridge Park.
