St. Francis Brooklyn Continues To Roll
The St. Francis Brooklyn Terriers (6-0-2) won their third consecutive match and remained unbeaten with a 2-0 victory over the Rhode Island Rams (4-4) at the URI Soccer Complex on Wednesday evening.
Senior defender Cyril Coisne scored the game winner in the 47th minute on a penalty kick. Senior midfielder Vincent Bezecourt, who had eight shots, added a goal in the 87thminute.
"I am very happy with the way the boys are playing," said Terriers' head coach Tom Giovatto. "It was a total team effort tonight. The level never dropped. Just an excellent job against a very good team. Cyril on the penalty spot is as good as it gets. He's very calm and he buried one again tonight."
Bezecourt created the first two chances for the Terriers in the match. His try was denied by Rams' keeper Nils Leifhelm in the 7th minute. He then fired a shot wide of the goal in the 24th minute.
Rhode Island created their chance in the 28th minute as Carlo David's free kick from 20-yards out sailed over the net.
Senior midfielder John Makaya came back with an opportunity for St. Francis Brooklyn. He fired a shot at the top of the box, which was stopped by Leifhelm in the 35th minute.
Bezecourt created another chance in the 37th minute, but his free kick was stopped by Leifhelm. The Terriers' playmaker came back with yet another chance in the 41st minute as he made a move around a defender and fired a shot wide of the near post.
The Terriers' offense started the attack in the second half. Junior Yussuf Olajide made a move around a defender and was taken down in the box, resulting in Coisne's penalty kick chance in the 47th minute.
St. Francis Brooklyn looked for insurance in the 63rd minute as sophomore Adrian Cosovic stole the ball and found Bezecourt. The Terriers' leading scorer then touched it back to the sophomore forward but his shot was stopped by Leifhelm.
The Terriers came right back seconds later; Bezecourt had his free kick denied by Leifhelm.
Bezecourt created another opportunity in the 75th minute, his shot was again stopped by Leifhelm.
SFBK came back seconds later when sophomore Dominick Falanga made a run down the left side of the field and fired a shot that was stopped by Leifhelm.
URI had a chance to tie the game in the 78th minute. David's free kick was saved by red-shirt senior goalkeeper Jack Binks.
The Terriers came right back on the counter attack as sophomore Fedrico Curbelo's rising shot was punched away by Leifhelm.
St. Francis Brooklyn, who outshot the Rams 17-3, had another chance for insurance in the 82nd minute. Senior Harry Odell fired a free kick from 20-yards out but it was turned away by Leifhelm.
The Terriers added an insurance marker in the 87 minute. Bezecourt received a pass from Olajide and beat Leifhelm with a blast for his fourth goal of the season.
Binks made two saves and recorded his sixth shutout of the season in the victory.
St. Francis Brooklyn returns to Brooklyn Bridge Park Pier 5 on Saturday when they host the University of Albany on Alumi Day. Kickoff is slated for 1:00 p.m.
