St. Francis Men's Soccer Defeat Rider, 3-1
Lawrenceville, New Jersey---A pair of late second half goals propelled the St. Francis College men’s soccer team to their second straight victory as they defeated the Rider University Broncs, 3-1, on Monday afternoon at Ben Cohen Field.
St. Francis (3-4-0) scored the first goal of the game as sophomore forward Kevin Correa recorded his team-leading fourth goal of the season in the 32nd minute. After receiving the pass from teammate Adam Maabdi, the Flushing, New York native was able to place a well-timed header that ricocheted off the far post to give the visitors the early lead.
Seven minutes into the second half, the Broncs’ Robert Kroschwitz mounted an offensive attack that was denied by senior goalkeeper Tyler Clarhaut. Kroschwitz blasted a shot from point blank range with Clarhaut stepping up with a leaping save to preserve the 1-0 lead.
Rider was able to even up the match in the 71st minute. Tyler Morris beat his defender down the right side of the field and was able to locate Kroschwitz, who sailed a shot from twenty-five yards away, over the reach of Clarhaut to knot the score at a goal apiece.
St. Francis netted the game-winner in the 77th minute as Maabdi tallied his third goal of the season, his third-game winner of the year in the process. Junior forward Gabriel Bagot was able to locate Maabid, who was charging in on goal. After delivering the pass, the Lille, France native was able to send on past Rider’s Jason Giordano for the 2-1 lead.
Freshman midfielder Viktor Bakkioui added the insurance goal in the 85th minute as classmate James Caicedo was able to steal the ball away from his defender and find Bakkioui for his first collegiate goal.
For the match, St. Francis outshot Rider, 25-11 and took a 6-2 advantage in corner kicks taken. Clarhaut finished the game with three saves while his counterpart Giordano turned away five shots.
St. Francis will be back in action on Friday night, as they welcome the Manhattan College Jaspers to Aviator Sports and Recreation Center. Kick-off is scheduled for 7:00 pm
