Still Undefeated! UTPA Wins at Prairie View
PRAIRIE VIEW – Freshman Andreya Barrera scored two goals to help the University of Texas-Pan American Broncs women’s soccer team remain undefeated through the first six matches in program history with a 3-1 win against the Prairie View A&M Panthers on Friday at Lady Panthers Field.
The Broncs (4-0-2) are just the third NCAA Division I women’s soccer team out of 22 in the history of Texas to be undefeated through their first six matches at the DI level, joining Baylor (5-0-1 in 1996) and Abilene Christian (5-0-1 in 2013).
Barrera’s first goal tied the game on an assist from freshman Aimie Inthoulay at the 25:51 mark. Her second goal gave the Broncs a two-goal advantage on a shot from 20 yards out into the top of the net at the 62:32 mark.
Freshman Jessica Suarez’s first-career goal turned out to be the game winner, as she scored on assist from freshman Zinnia Hannig at 39:18 to make it 2-1.
Freshman goalkeeper Aubrie Coley (2-0-2) made five saves for the win. The lone Panthers (0-4-0) goal came at 14:36, when Celene Batrez took a header from Alicia Cooper and shot it in from 12 yards out. That marked the first time the Broncs had ever trailed in a game, a span that lasted 11:25.
Both teams had 15 shots. The Broncs had eight shots on goal while the Panthers had six.
The Broncs are back in action on Friday, Sept. 12 at 6 p.m. when the face Abilene Christian at Incarnate Word.
