Stony Brook announces 2013 schedule
June 25, 2013
Stony Brook, N.Y. - The Stony Brook men's soccer team will embark on a challenging 17-game schedule in 2013, aiming to continue its ascent towards being a Northeast Region power and striving to claim a fourth America East Championship. Head coach Ryan Anatol announced the schedule Monday, which includes six matches against teams that finished in the top 75 in NCAA RPI and three teams that appeared in the NCAA Tournament last season.
"Our 2013 schedule is competitive and challenging and will help develop our team as we move forward," Anatol said. "Playing the quality opponents on our non-conference schedule will help prepare us for the challenges of the America East Conference and compete for a league championship."
The regular season commences with a Friday night home match against Sacred Heart at LaValle Stadium on Aug. 30. The following weekend, the Seawolves will play a pair in the city of Philadelphia, where they will take on Penn Sept. 6 and Drexel Sept. 8. The Dragons were an NCAA Tournament participant in 2012.
Stony Brook returns home to face Rhode Island (Sept. 13) and Villanova (Sept. 15) at home before facing Fordham in the Bronx on Sept. 20. SB wraps up that weekend with a home contest against Central Connecticut on Sept. 22.
The Seawolves will play up in Boston Sept. 28, taking on NCAA Tournament participant Northeastern, which reached the second round last year. They will also head to Morgantown, WVa., to play West Virginia on Oct. 8. Stony Brook's final non-conference game comes Oct. 22 at Lehigh.
This season's America East schedule features seven games, four at home and three on the road. Stony Brook will host Albany (Oct. 4), Binghamton (Oct. 16), Hartford (Oct. 27) and defending regular season champion Vermont (Nov. 2). They will travel to New Hampshire (Oct. 12), UMass Lowell (Oct. 19) and defending tournament champion UMBC (Nov. 6). The Oct. 19 game against the River Hawks will be the first match against the conference's newcomer since 1998 when both programs were Div. II.
The 2013 America East Championship will bring together the top six teams in the conference to battle for the tournament title and corresponding NCAA Tournament bid. The quarterfinals will take place Nov. 9, semifinals Nov. 13 and championship game either Nov. 16 and Nov. 17. All games will take place at the site of the higher seed.
Under Anatol, who is beginning his third year at the helm of the Seawolves, Stony Brook returns 15 letterwinners from last season's team that went 11-6-1 overall and 4-3-0 in America East while finishing No. 55 in the NCAA RPI, the program's best-ever finish.
