Stony Brook tips NJIT for third straight win

September 1, 2013

Stony Brook, N.Y. - The Stony Brook women's soccer team (3-0-1) won its third straight game on Sunday with a 2-1 victory over NJIT at LaValle Stadium. Freshman Maxie New (Clayton, N.J.) scored the game-winner in the 73rd minute, while senior Larissa Nysch (Dresher, Pa.) added a goal and an assist.

Coach Sue Ryan's Reaction

"Give credit to NJIT, they had a good game plan today and they executed well. Sometimes you have to find a way to win, whether its pretty or ugly, like it was at times today. Maxie New scored a big goal for us and really showcased her power and finesse. That's what makes her so good."

Goal Recaps

• Nysch put the Seawolves on the board first at the 15:59 mark of the first half. Taking a long pass from junior Shannon Grogan (Eastampton, N.J.), Nysch outraced a defender and powered a shot under the crossbar from the left side of the box to make it 1-0.
• Despite outplaying and outshooting the resilient Highlanders (1-3-0), Stony Brook found itself in a tie game when Abi Fakolujo stashed home a rebound off a rare flurry in the box to equalize at 59:20.
• Stony Brook earned the win it deserved, however, when New put the hosts up for good at 72:22. After a failed clearance, Nysch headed the ball towards sophomore Tessa Devereaux (Fayetteville, N.Y.), who was able to flick a header into the path of an on-rushing New in the box. The freshman calmly collected the ball and tucked it inside the right post to make it 2-1.

The Numbers Game

• Stony Brook held an 18-6 advantage in shots, including a 13-0 margin in the first half.
• Nysch led all players with seven shot attempts.
• Redshirt junior Queli Ornelas (Palm Harbor, Fla.) played a strong game off the bench, firing three shots on target.
• Redshirt junior Ashley Castanio (Oceanside, N.Y.) made two stops to earn the win.
• Devereaux earned her first assist of the season after posting a team-high seven helpers a season ago.
