Storm Upset No. 23 Panthers 2-1 in 2OT
PAINESVILLE, Ohio – Playing in its third double overtime game of the season, the No. 23 Ohio Dominican men's soccer team found themselves on the losing end, falling to the Lake Erie Storm 2-1 on Sunday afternoon.
The Panthers are now 3-1-1 (2-1 GLIAC) while the Storm improved to 4-1-1 (3-1).
Junior Frazer Fernandes (Gahanna, Ohio) broke a scoreless tie in the 47th minute with his third goal of the year, to give the Panthers the lead. Senior Billy McGlone (Lexington, Ohio) slipped the ball to Fernandes from the 20 yard line who fired a laser into the back of the net from straight on.
But Lake Erie answered just five minutes later when Ryan Gibson set up Alfred Majer with a pass from the seven yard line. Majer finished from close range under the cross bar to extend the match.
In the first overtime, ODU managed to fire off seven shots, none of which connected for a game-winning goal, which then put the Panthers into their third double overtime of the season.
Just two minutes into the second overtime, the Storm's Anthony Novak took the ball at the 10, beat the defenders and scored from three yards out for the golden goal.
It was a tough defeat for an ODU side that dominated the large majority of regulation. The Panthers outshot the Storm 21-14 and 10-7 on goal.
ODU will next make a trip to Michigan to play at Northwood on Friday, Sept. 27 at 4 p.m. and Saginaw Valley on Sunday, Sept. 29 at 2:30 pm.
