SU Blanks Colgate, 6-0
SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Freshman Jordan Vale scored two goals and the SU men's soccer team (3-1-0) used five second half tallies to dominate Colgate, 6-0, on Monday, Sept. 3 at the SU Soccer Stadium. The six-goal output marks the most goals scored in a game by an Orange side since 1994.
SU also notched its third win of the 2012 campaign. The three victories match last season's win total, which was not achieved until Oct. 22 against Cincinnati.
"We took our chances against a very good Colgate team," SU head coach Ian McIntyre said. "We went looking for that next goal and that was pleasing from a coaching perspective."
Syracuse posted its first goal in the 17th minute when Ted Cribley found a charging Lars Muller who pushed it past the goalkeeper.
Cribley also ignited the second half scoring frenzy when he fired a shot from the right side of the box in the 47th minute for his first career goal. Two minutes later, Vale capitalized on a rebound which he launched to the back of the net. Junior Tony Asante added another Orange goal in the 51st minute when he chipped a shot over the goalkeeper to add to the SU advantage.
Vale registered his second goal of the game on a strike from the left side of the pitch, while freshman Ben Ramin capped SU's offensive outburst when he launched a shot from distance in the 77th minute to notch his first career goal.
Syracuse outshot the Raiders, 16-12, while Colgate owned a 7-4 advantage in corner kicks.
Freshman goalkeeper Alex Bono made three saves to earn his third victory of the season in 75:21 minutes of action.
The Orange returns to the pitch on Friday, Sept. 7 against NJIT as part of the annual Mayor's Cup in Oneonta, N.Y. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m. at Red Dragon Soccer Field.
Match Notes: The Orange last scored six goals on Oct. 26, 1994 against Oneonta … Cribley's four points on one goal and two assists is a career high … SU freshmen posted a combined six points, as freshman Stefanos Stamoulacatos registered two assists and Vale scored two goals … Vale and Asante both scored their third goals of the season.
