SU Falls Against Cal State Fullerton, 3-1
LAS VEGAS, NEV. – Senior Ted Cribley (Sheffield, England) scored his third goal of the season, but Cal State Fullerton (2-6-0) used two first half goals to defeat the SU men’s soccer team, 3-1, on Sunday, Sept. 16 to conclude UNLV Nike Invitational competition at Peter Johann Memorial Field. The defeat snaps a four-match winning streak for the Orange (6-2-0).
“Overall, we are disappointed with the defeat,” said SU head coach Ian McIntyre. “However, our energy and enthusiasm were great in difficult conditions. We are excited to start preparing for our home BIG EAST opener.”
The Titans got on the board in the 30th minute when Gerzon Blanco headed a corner kick into the back of the net. Cal State Fullerton added another three minutes later off of the head of Jesse Escalante.
Cribley cut the deficit to one in the 42nd minute when he stole the ball from the Titan backline, dribbled it into the box and launched it past goalkeeper Adam Zepeda.
Ian Ramos added another for Cal State Fullerton in the 49th minute, increasing the Titans’ lead
Rookie goalkeeper Alex Bono (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) recorded five saves in 71 minutes of action. Redshirt freshman goalie Andrew Coughlin (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) finished the match, and deflected a penalty kick in the 72nd minute to keep the Orange within two goals.
Syracuse opens BIG EAST play against Seton Hall on Saturday, Sept. 22. Match time is set for 7 p.m. at the SU Soccer Stadium.
Match Notes: With the goal, Cribley has recorded a point in three matches this season … Coughlin recorded his first career save … SU finishes its non-conference schedule with six victories, its most wins out of conference in a season since 1992, when the Orange won six matches.
