Surging Saints Win Fourth Straight
LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. – For the second time this season, Siena Soccer has achieved a four-match winning streak. Junior captain Matt Needham scored his first goal of the year and freshman goalkeeper Josh Weiss posted his fifth clean sheet as the Saints shutout Canisius 1-0.
With the win Siena (9-5, 4-1) improves to a perfect 5-0 at Siena Turf Field, matching the best home start to a season in program history (1998). The Saints also remain tied atop the MAAC Standings with Iona, which scored late to beat Saint Peter’s 4-3.
Siena continued its trend of getting off to quick starts as Needham headed in a Uros Antic corner in the 23rd minute. Siena has outscored its opponents 10-1 in the first half this season.
Canisius (7-4-2, 2-2-1) outshot the Saints 15-4 including 9-0 in the second half, but could not crack Weiss. The Golden Griffins had their best chance in the 77th minute, but Thomas Teupen’s attempt hit the post.
Weiss made three of his four saves in the second half as the home team has now won the past eight meetings in the series.
Siena enjoys a week off before opening the second half of its conference schedule next Wednesday when the Saints host Fairfield at 3 p.m.
