Sutherby's OT Goal Gives Stags 1-0 Win
The Fairfield University women's soccer team earned a 1-0 overtime win over visiting Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) foe Saint Peter's University Friday night on Lessing Field. The Stags improve to 10-5-2 overall and 7-1-0 in league play with the win, while the Peacocks fall to 2-16-0 on the year and 1-6-0 in MAAC action.
In a game the Stags had the statistical advantage, with a 33-3 edge in shots and a 7-0 edge in corner kicks, Saint Peter's goalkeeper Caitlin Hoffer was the equalizer. The senior keeper made nine saves to keep Saint Peter's even and force overtime.
Stephanie Sutherby provided the game-winning tally as she accepted a pass from Carly Beyar 35-yards out on the near side and lofted the ball towards the back post. Hoffer was able to put a hand on the ball that was just under the crossbar, but was unable to keep it out of the goal.
The victory keeps the Stags even with Marist, who defeated Loyola 1-0 at home Friday night, in the MAAC standings. Both teams enter the final game of the year with 21 points. The Stags can now finish either first or second heading into next weekend's MAAC Championship.
Veronica Saez earned the win in net, with her fifth shutout of the season, but did not see a shot on goal in the game.
Fairfield closes out the regular season on Sunday as it hosts Manhattan College on Lessing Field at 1 p.m.
