Tar Heels back on Top of Women’s Ranking

Twenty-one time national champion North Carolina is back in familiar surroundings this week, sitting atop the TopDrawerSoccer.com Tournament 64 National Ranking for women’s soccer.

The Tar Heels defeated Ohio State 3-0 in Columbus this weekend, while previous #1 UCLA suffered the first blemish on their record, drawing 1-1 to undefeated Pepperdine. The combination of results moved UNC to #1 and the Bruins down to #5, with weekend winners Stanford, Notre Dame and Virginia at 2, 3 and 4 respectively in this week’s ranking.

New entrants to this week’s ranking include the aforementioned Pepperdine Waves and CAA member William & Mary, which defeated Georgetown on Friday by a score of 3-1. South Florida and Washington leave the ranking for now.

The TopDrawerSoccer.com Tournament 64 National Ranking is a running effort to project the postseason NCAA Tournament field, including each automatic conference and at-large qualifier.

The TopDrawerSoccer.com Women’s College Team of the Week is chosen after reviewing every match report for Division One soccer. Penn State’s Maya Hayes headlines this week’s list after scoring 5 times in two matches as the Nittany Lions defeated Pittsburgh and North Carolina State. The sophomore youth national team veteran from West Orange, NJ now has 9 goals this season, helping Erica Walsh’s team to a 5-1-0 record.
