Tar Heels Fall To Cardinal In Overtime
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - U.S. Youth national team standouts Jane Campbell and Chioma Obogagu teamed up to lift sixth-ranked Stanford past fourth-ranked North Carolina 1-0 in women's soccer action Friday night before a packed house at Fetzer Field.
The Cardinal recorded their first win ever over the Tar Heels in 13 tries as Ubogagu tallied from a near impossible angle at the 99-minute mark to end the marathon match.
The Stanford goal came off a long ball served to the top of the Tar Heel penalty area after a foul by the Tar Heels at midfield. After Carolina's Satara Murray redirected the ball on the initial clearance, Stanford's Alex Doll collected the ball about 25 yards from goal. She sent the ball wide to Obogagu, a member of the U.S. World Champion U20 team in 2012, and she shot from 15 yards out near the end line on the left side. It appeared North Carolina goalkeeper Lindsay Harris thought the ball was going to go wide but it skimmed right past her on the ground and into the net for the game-winning tally.
"Lindsey felt the ball was going wide. She thought is was going to hit the side panel," said UNC head coach Anson Dorrance. "I guess she didn't know where she was in the goal. And then she let it go. It was right at her feet. She could have easily saved it."
It was a disappointing end to the match for the Tar Heels who are playing a host of young players while trying to replace seven starters off last year's NCAA quarterfinalist team. Dorrance made liberal use of his bench in the season opener as 21 players saw action before a crowd of 4,509 and a national television audience on ESPN3. The game's start was delayed more than an hour by rain, but the crowd stuck around to the end.
Carolina outshot the veteran Cardinal side 18-12 including a 9-5 margin of shots on goal. Campbell was the biggest difference in the game as she made nine saves in the match. Carolina's best chances to score came twice from freshman Alex Kimball who missed just wide with 14 seconds left in the first half and another shot by Kimball, who had beaten the defense, but was unable to get it past a sprawling Campbell in the 76th minute. Carolina had another brilliant chance in the 86th minute as Emily Bruder's shot was parried away by Campbell at the last second.
Twice in the first overtime period, Stanford appeared to have clinched the victory but both times missed empty nets after getting behind the Tar Heel defense. Obogagu's shot at 94:27 and Taylor Uhl's attempt at 95:19 both went just wide to the right after excellent looks at the goal.
Carolina must regroup quickly and play Ohio State Sunday at 2 p.m. at Fetzer Field in the second game of a doubleheader after Duke and Stanford play at 12 noon. In the first game on Friday night, Ohio State upset the 10th-ranked Blue Devils 1-0.
The loss Friday was only the fifth in a season opener in Carolina's 36-year history. It was only the second time Carolina has lost a home opener, the other time being against South Carolina 1-0 in 2007. Carolina is now 9-1-3 all-time against Stanford.
