Temple Women's Soccer sets a New Milestone
ITHACA, N.Y. — Temple women’s soccer defeated Cornell 2-1 in double overtime Sunday afternoon to win the Cornell Classic. The Owls improve their winning streak to seven games, and now hold the longest winning streak in program history.
This was the first meeting in program history between the Owls and Big Red. The match was for the tournament championship, and was dubbed “the battle of the unbeatens,” by Head Coach Seamus O’Connor. Cornell came into the match 3-0, after defeating VMI 5-0 Friday.
The first goal of the game came early at the 7:46 minute mark by Temple. Cornell’s goalkeeper came out to play the ball at the top of the box, but she was blocked by Kelly Farrell. Farrell was then first to it in the box and scored. Cornell found the equalizer at 22:53 minute mark from a corner kick on the right side. Cornell’s player gave a soft header from about 15 yards out, just sneaking inside the far post along the ground.
The match went into a second overtime until the 107:48 minute mark. Temple’s overtime winner started with a corner kick by Kaylee Harner. The corner was cleared back out to the right side, and then served again toward the far post by Shannon Senour. The ball went off the back shoulder of Gabriella McKeown and back out to the right post where Kelly Farrell tucked it in.
“This was the best we have played all season,” said head coach Seamus O’Connor. “We did a much better job on possessions and passing, which created more quality chances. Before, we relied a lot on set plays and the other team’s mistakes. I am just so pleased with our team’s performance today.”
Temple also had four players make the Big Red Shootout All-Tournament Team. The team consisted of three forwards, three midfielders, three defenders, one goalie, plus another player of any position. The players selected for Temple were (GK) Shauni Kerkhoff, (D) Erin Lafferty, (M) Paula Jurewicz and (F) Kelly Farrell.
The Owls will be back in action next Friday, Sept. 19 when they travel to Delaware for 7:00 p.m. game.
