Terriers Announce 2014 Schedule
Brooklyn Heights, New York---The defending Northeast Conference champions, the St. Francis Brooklyn men's soccer team, released its schedule for the upcoming 2014 season, head coach Tom Giovatto announced today.
In all, the Terriers will take on 18 squads, consisting of seven Northeast Conference matches along with eleven non-conference matches. Of the non-conference opponents, three members come from the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (Manhattan, Saint Peter's and Rider), three members from the the America East Conference (UMass Lowell, Vermont and UAlbany), two from the Patriot League (Lafayette and Army), as well as two members of the newly-released Sun Belt Conference (Howard and NJIT) and Saint Joseph's of the Atlantic-10 Conference.
The Terriers kick off the regular season on the road as they travel to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to take on Saint Joseph's at 8:00 pm on August 29th. Tuesday, Sept. 2 will be the home opener at Brooklyn Bridge Park as St. Francis Brooklyn hosts Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference member, Manhattan at 7:00 pm. Last season, the Terriers posted a 4-1-1 in their brand new facility.
For the eighth straight season under coach Giovatto, the Terriers will participate in a tournament as they head to Burlington, Vermont for the Morgan Stanley Smith Barney Windjammer Classic, hosted by the the University of Vermont. On Friday, Sept. 5th, the Terriers will take on America East member, UMass Lowell, in the opening game at 1:30 pm and conclude on Sunday, Sept. 7th against the Catamounts at 1:30 pm. The three-game, two state road trip concludes on Saturday, September 13 as they travel to Easton, Pennsylvania to take on the Lafayette Leopards at 1:00 pm.
St. Francis Brooklyn returns home to Brooklyn Bridge Park on Sept. 16th as they welcome the Howard University Bison to Brooklyn Heights at 7:00 pm. A two-game road trip commences as the Terriers head up to West Point to tangle with the Army Black Knights on Sept. 20 at 7:30 pm and concludes on Sept. 24 as they travel to Jersey City, New Jersey to tangle with the Saint Peter's University Peacocks at 4:00pm. To end the month of September, SFBK welcomes Rider to Brooklyn Heights on the 27th for an afternoon contest at 1:00 pm before heading to Albany on September 30th for a 7:00 pm contest against the Great Danes.
The final non-conference contest of the season pits the Terriers against NJIT at Brooklyn Bridge Park on October 4th at 1:00 pm. Northeast Conference play finds the defending champions on the road for the first three games as on Oct. 10 the Terriers play Sacred Heart in Fairfield, Connecticut. St. Francis Brooklyn takes a tour of Western Pennsylvania beginning on Oct. 17 as they take on the Saint Francis University Red Flash and conclude on the 19th in Moon Township against the Robert Morris University Colonials.
The Terriers play host to the Central Connecticut State Blue Devils on October 24th in a rematch of last year's NEC semifinals. After the Blue Devils defeated the Terriers, 1-0, during the regular season [en route to securing the Northeast Conference regular season title and the overall #1 seed], the Terriers evened the score by stunning the regular season champions behind two second half goals to advance to their first conference championship since 1998.
On October 26th, the Terriers head up to Smithfield, Rhode Island where they tangle with the team they defeated in the NEC finals, the Bryant University Bulldogs. St. Francis Brooklyn twice rallied to tie the game on second half goals and senior captain Andy Cormack scored the golden goal on a free kick seven minutes into the first overtime to give the Terriers their first championships in 15 years.
The final two games of the season will be played at home as the Terriers welcome Fairleigh Dickinson on Halloween (Oct. 31) at 7:00 pm and conclude the season on Sunday, Nov. 9th as they battle their rival, LIU Brooklyn at 1:00 pm. The Northeast Conference tournament will feature the top four teams that qualify, starting on November 14th with the semifinals and the championship game to be played on Nov. 16th at the higher seed.
