Terriers & Army Play To 1-1 Draw
Brooklyn Heights, New York – The St. Francis Brooklyn Terriers and Army Black Knights played to a 1-1 draw in double overtime on Sunday afternoon at Brooklyn Bridge Park. The draw is the second of the season for the Terriers and they are now (2-3-2) on the season. The Black Knights' picked up their first draw of the season and stand at (2-3-1) in 2016.
The Terriers were coming off a thrilling 2-1 victory in double overtime against the NJIT Highlanders on Wednesday, September 14. Today's contest marked the second consecutive game where the Terriers played into double overtime and the fourth time this season that they did so.
St. Francis Brooklyn tool control of the game early in the first half, as they had a pair of scoring attempts within the first seven minutes of play. Freshman defender Faouzi Taieb sent a header wide of the net in the second minute of play and senior defender Collyns Laokandi had a shot blocked in the seventh minute.
The Terriers cashed in when sophomore forward Leonard Kirschner found the back of the net in the eighth minute as he fired a rocket from 20-yards out, which beat Army's keeper. Junior defender Dominick Falanga set up Kirschner for his first goal of the season, which gave the Terriers the early 1-0 advantage.
Both teams would settle in on the defensive end after the first score of the game. Terriers' senior midfielder Salvatore Barone had a shot turned away by Army's junior goalkeeper Christian Nolasco in the 20th minute.
In the 31st minute Terriers' senior keeper Seth Erdman made his first save of the day as he turned away Army's senior forward Nick Williams, who sent a header on goal. The attempt was the Black Knight's first registered shot on goal of the game.
After the first half the Terriers led 1-0 and outshot the Black Knights, 5-4.
The second half mirrored the first as both teams were locked into a defensive battle. Early in the second half, Army went on the attack, but the Terriers defense would stand tall. Erdman turned away their first scoring attempt in the 47th minute.
Despite the Terriers stout defensive play, Army was able to tally the equalizer in the 74th minute off a corner kick. Army's junior midfielder Marcos Arroyo sent the ball towards the net off the corner and freshman defender Zac McGraw was able to head it in off a deflection.
The Terriers had two chances in the offensive zone before time expired in regulation. Kirschner had a shot blocked in the 81st minute and senior defender Fabian Suele sent a shot wide of the net after he corralled Kirschner's blocked shot.
After 90 minutes of play in regulation the game went into overtime. The first overtime period saw a scoring opportunity from each side, but neither was able to find the back of the net as play was controlled at midfield. The game remained knotted at 1-1 and went into a second overtime.
In the second overtime, Erdman was able to turn away Army's freshman forward Rex Epps in the 106th minute. The save was his third of the day.
The horn sounded after the second overtime and ended in a 1-1 draw. The Terriers showed grit – they battled from the first whistle to the last.
St. Francis Brooklyn outshot Army 13-12 on the afternoon. The Terriers had five shots on goal, opposed to the Black Knights' four. Army took five corner kicks in the game to the Terriers three.
The Terriers will be back in action on Wednesday, September 21 when they host Saint Peter's University at 7:00 p.m.
