Terriers Defeat RMU; 3-2; in Overtime
Brooklyn Heights, New York---Junior forward Kevin Correa’s overtime goal sealed the victory as St. Francis Brooklyn defeated the Robert Morris University Colonials, 3-2, on Sunday afternoon at Brooklyn BridgePark-Pier 5. The match featured the #2 and #3 ranked teams in the NSCAA/Continental Tire North Atlantic Rankings. St. Francis Brooklyn now stands at 8-3-1; 2-1-0 NEC while the Colonials fall to 6-6-2; 1-3-0 NEC.
Two minutes into the overtime session, the home eleven struck for the game winner off the foot of the reigning Northeast Conference Rookie of the Year. Correa created space between him and two Colonial defenders while placing a screaming liner on goal that soared past Robert Morris’ goalkeeper, Joseph Kuta, for the game-winner. For Correa, it was his team-leading eighth goal of the season and his 19th career tally.
St. Francis Brooklyn scored the first marker of the match in the 16th minute as junior midfielder Cyril Coisne headed in his first career goal off the feed from senior co-captain John Johansson. The Lille, France product received the cross from Johansson, who took the corner kick for the Terriers deep in the left corner. Coisne was able to soar high in the air and place a well-timed header that beat a diving Kuta for the early advantage.
The Terriers the lead into intermission thanks to a fantastic effort from junior goalkeeper Jack Binks, who recorded four saves in the stanza. Two minutes after the second half began, Robert Morris tested the Darlington, England native as Miro Cabrilo fired a free-kick from thirty-five yards out that Binks was able to deny. In the 50th minute of the contest, Andy Cormack of the Terriers narrowly extended the lead off a free-kick attempt but the shot stuck the left post and went out of play. The Colonials got on the board after the Terriers couldn’t clear the ball out of their zone and was credited to an own goal.
Correa struck for the first time in the match in the 75th minute as he and senior midfielder James Caicedo were able to connect on a well-timed give-and-go feed as Correa netted his seventh goal of the season. Caicedo’s helper was the first of the season and his eighth career assist.
Nearly five minutes later, the Colonials once again were able to find the back off the net, this time off the foot of Bruce Cullen. Cullen was able to create space deep down the left sideline and fired a shot that Binks initially stopped but couldn’t hold on to.
Binks made two tremendous saves late for St. Francis Brooklyn. In the 88th minute, Devon Williams shot the ball from just outside the seventeen that Binks was able to make the stand-up save. With just eight seconds remaining in regulation, Binks turned away the conference’s leading scorer Neco Brett’s scoring chance sending the match to overtime, the second in as many days for the Terriers.
Robert Morris outshot the Terriers by a 21-17 mark and took a 9-7 advantage on corner kicks. Binks stopped a career-best nine shots on the afternoon while just yielding the two tallies. His counterpart, Kuta, made just one save in the contest.
St. Francis Brooklyn will hit the road on Friday, October 27th, as they travel to New Britain, Connecticut to tangle with the Central Connecticut Blue Devils. Kick-off from Central Connecticut Soccer Field is slated for 7:00 pm.
