Terriers Remain Perect In NEC; Blank SFU 2-0
Loretto, PA - - -The red-hot St. Francis Brooklyn Terriers continued their impressive play of late as they blanked the Saint Francis U. Red Flash, 2-0, in a key Northeast Conference contest on Friday afternoon. The victory gave the Red & Blue sole possession of first-place in the NEC standings as they upped their mark to a perfect 3-0 and 7-4-2 overall. The Terriers are now 6-1-1 over their last eight contests.
Freshman defender Faouzi Taieb scored on a header just 14:35 into the contest for the first game-winning tally of his career. Senior Salvatore Barone set-up the goal with a gorgeous corner kick that found the head of Taieb from point-blank range.
The Red Flash, who outshot the Terriers by a 16-11 margin, had several opportunities to knot the score but senior goalkeeper Seth Erdman turned them aside each time and finished with six saves.
Erdman saved his biggest stop for last after the hosts were awarded a penalty kick with just 1:05 remaining in the contest. Overtime looked like a sure bet after a Red Flash player was taken down inside the box, however, Erdman bailed out his teammates by stopping his second penalty kick of the season . NSCAA All-American Francis de Vries was Erdman's latest victim in the one-on-one battle as he was able to deflect the shot off the right post.
The Terriers added more agony for the hosts as Barone scored an insurance tally with just 27 seconds remaining for his team-leading fourth goal of the campaign. Dominick Falanga picked up the assist as he found a wide open Barone, who chipped it in over the head of Red Flash goalkeeper Marcus Rojas.
St. Francis Brooklyn will travel to Robert Morris on Sunday afternoon.
