Thirsting for road win, FMU falls to Camels 3-0
BUIES CREEK, NC - Michelle Procaccini broke a scoreless tie with a goal 28 seconds before halftime and Campbell University went on to a 3-0 win over Francis Marion University, Wednesday evening (Aug. 24) in women's college soccer action.
The young Patriots, playing their first road contest of the season, fall to 1-2-0. The Camels remain unbeaten at 3-0.
FMU will play at Radford University on Friday night at 7 p.m.
Campbell outshot Francis Marion 17-5, but the Patriots led in corner kicks 8-7.
Senior FMU goalkeeper Lauren Vetock registered five saves, while Ryann Torrero (1 save in 82 minutes) and Lauren Frick (0 saves in eight minutes) combined on the shutout.
Procaccini's score came on a right-footed shot from outside the box that deflected off Vetock and into the net.
Pirjo Leppikangas scored off a double assist from Ashley Clark and Caitlin Schneider in the 54th minute to up the margin to 2-0. Leppikangas returned the favor to Clark by assisting on her score in the 76th minute.
Freshman midfielder Tyler King had two of FMU's five shots.
