Thorpe leads King past Trevecca Nazarene
NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The King University women's soccer bounced back from their loss over the weekend with a nonconference win on the road Saturday evening. The Tornado traveled to Nashville to take on Trevecca Nazarene University, and Rachel Thorpe netted two goals in a three minute span late in the second half to give King the 3-1 victory.
Neither team had many scoring opportunities in the first half as there were just seven total shots taken in the frame. Thorpe took the first of King's three shots in the half in the first minute, but it sailed high. Following a Trojan shot, Casey Shanklin had a shot go high in the 12th minute.
In the 13th minute, Trevecca Nazarene (4-8-2) had a scoring chance, but King's goalkeeper, Nicole Dagher stopped the attempt.
Paula Doran gave the Tornado (4-7-2) their best scoring opportunity of the first half as she ripped a shot in the 35th minute that was turned away by Allison Ashley, the Trojan keeper.
The game was scoreless at halftime and the Tornado came out and attacked the Trojans in the second half. Doran had a shot blocked in the 50th minute, Thorpe ripped a shot that went high in the 51st minute and Lindsay Curtis had her shot attempted stopped by Allison in the 54th minute.Rayna Spears finally found the back of the net in the 55th minute as she ripped shot from just outside the box on the right side of the field back across to the left to beat the keeper and give King the 1-0 lead.
The play then moved to the other end of the field and the Trojans were able to even the score in the 68the minute as Brooke Gann took a deflected pass from Abbie Alosi and ripped her shot from 15 yards out in to the left upper 90.
However, Thorpe had an answer in the 80th minute she laced a shot that glanced off the keeper into the right corner of the net to give the lead back to King. Just three minutes later, Thorpe struck again. This time she took a pass from Shalisa Barnett and buried her shot into the back of the net to give King an insurance goal.
The Tornado didn't need the insurance as they went on to take the contest 3-1. King was outshot 14-12 by Trevecca Nazarene, but the Tornado had more shots on goal at 8-7. For Spears, that marked her fourth goal of the season while Thorpe's two goals gives her seven for the season.
King will be in action again on Tuesday when they travel to take on North Greenville University. Kickoff from Tigerville, S.C., is scheduled for 5:00 p.m.
