Thorpe nets 3, as King cruises past Milligan
BRISTOL, Tenn. – The King University women's soccer team continued their offensive attack to cruise by Milligan College. Rachel Thorpe tallied three goals and Miranda Smith added another. The result marked the first 3-0 start for the women's soccer team since 2009.
King (3-0) started the offensive attack, once again, from the opening whistle. Within the first ten minutes, King had already tallied three shots. The shots continued to go wide but in the 24th minute, Thorpe netted her first of the game. Miranda Smith played a ball from the right corner across the top of the box where Thorpe drilled it into the bottom left side of the net.
The scoring did not stop there as Thorpe added another goal in the 30th minute. This time, Thorpe did it all by herself as she carried the ball down the left side of the field and let a shot go from the top of the box that resulted in goal number two, her fifth of the season.
When the halftime whistle blew, King led Milligan (1-3) two to zero.
The Tornado did not slow down at all as Smith added a goal seven minutes into the second half. Catherine Walsh sent a pass to Smith at the top of the box where she sent a shot to the bottom right side of the net to put the score at three to zero.
Shortly thereafter, the scoring was not done as Thorpe added an excellent goal. Walsh, yet again, delivered a ball to the middle of the box where Thorpe connected with her head and sent one past the goalie for her third goal of the night and sixth on the season. This goal completed Thorpe's second hat trick of the year.
King outshot Milligan 31-5, which included a 15-1 shot differential in the first half. The Tornado also tallied six corner kicks and kept Milligan to zero. Nicole Dagher earned her third win of the early season and combined for a shutout with Olivia Drake who played the entire second half.
The team will travel to Emmanuel College on Saturday, September 13 at 5:00 p.m. to open Conference Carolinas play.
