Three Score in UW-W Men's Road Victory
Three different players scored as the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's soccer team defeated Olivet College 3-1 Sunday in Olivet, Michigan to improve to 1-1 this season.
Olivet seemed to have some early momentum recording two corners and two shots in the first three minutes of the match.
The Warhawks countered with some offensive pressure over the next 19 minutes, but were unable to capitalize.
An Olivet foul in the 40th minute resulted in a free kick from about 22 yards out. Jack Wirth (Pewaukee, Wis./Pewaukee) was elected to take the kick and found a hole in the Comet defense for the first goal of the game. The goal is Wirth's second this season and third in his career.
Another Olivet foul early in the second half resulted in another goal for the Warhawks, this time on a penalty kick. Senior captain Kyle Clancy (Palatine, Ill./Palatine) was the goal scorer.
Warhawk goalkeeper Toney Anderson (Racine, Wis./St. Catherine's) made several key saves over the next 23 minutes and even got some help from the crossbar at one point to keep the Comets off the scoreboard.
Freshman forward Manny Barajas (Racine, Wis./St. Catherine's) extended the Warhawk lead to three when he scored an unassisted goal in the 71st minute of play.
Less than a minute later, the chances of a Warhawk shutout disappeared when Olivet snuck one past Anderson to make it 3-1.
Neither team recorded a quality opportunity the rest of the way.
UW-W outshot Olivet 11-9, but both teams notched four shots on goal.
Anderson made three saves in the match to earn his first victory this season.
Next up, the Warhawks will travel to Collegeville, Minnesota on Friday, September 7th to face Saint John's University in a match beginning at 4:30 p.m.
