Thunderbirds Too Much for Kangaroos as They Fall 4-0 in Final Regular Season Game
(Kansas City, Mo.) - Saturday afternoon, the UMKC women's soccer team fell 4-1to the Southern Utah Thunderbirds in what was the final regular game for both squads.
With this loss, the Kangaroos (8-7-4, 6-2-1 SL) will head into the Summit League Tournament 1-2-1 in their last four games. Also, they are now 0-3 in season finale games in school history.
As for the Thunderbirds (4-11-3, 2-7 SL), they finished the season with two straight wins totaling 10 goals.
In the first half, no score, Southern Utah got on the board first with a goal by Shelby Ostler during the 23rd minute. Then, in the 41st minute, the Thunderbirds scored again by way of Vanessa Lilli to take a 2-0 lead. Riley Bassett was credited with the assist.
The Thunderbirds continued their first half flurry when it tacked on another score to go up 3-0 during the 44th minute. This time, Amanda Humphreys was credited with the score.
With three goals scored in the first half, it matched the most given up by the Kangaroos in a half this season. Against Missouri, UMKC surrendered three goals in the second half in route to a 3-0 defeat.
Also, the Kangaroos had not given up more than one goal in nine straight games.
Early in the second half, during the 46th minute, the Thunderbirds picked up where they left off when Bassett scored to increase the lead to four. Stacey Brinkman was credited with the assist.
During the 81st minute, same score, UMKC freshman midfielder Allison Schau scored to cut the lead to the three. Freshman defender Kaely Tott was credit with assist and it was the first score for Schau this season.
For the remainder of the match, neither team scored again as Southern Utah held to win, 4-1.
Up next for UMKC, it will compete in the Summit League Tournament for the time in school history on Nov. 4 in Rochester, MI. Times and location are to be announced.
