Tigers Edged By Omaha
Omaha, Neb. -The Pacific men's soccer team was nipped on the road at Nebraska-Omaha Sunday by a score of 2-1 at Caniglia Field. Freshman Brian Im posted the first goal of his collegiate career for the Tigers, but the Mavericks answered with two second half goals for the win.
After a scoreless first half, Im tucked a loose ball in the box into the left corner in the 56th minute as Pacific broke through for a 1-0 lead. However, in the 61st minute, the Mavericks drew level as Fazlo Aihodzic scooped up a failed clearance and booted a strike past Pacific goalkeeper Curtis Goldsmith to equalize.
Tristan Blackmon had an attempt blocked in the 66th minute, and the Mavericks defended a Pacific corner kick in the 70th minute. Aihodzic missed high for Omaha in the 78th minute and Goldsmith denied a shot by Mark Moulton in the 87th minute.
The match looked destined for overtime before Logan Mendez collected the ball outside the box, turned and after a few dribbled, finished to the far side, just inside the post for a 2-1 advantage in the 89th minute. Blackmon had the Tigers' last attempt to draw level, with a shot saved by Omaha keeper Joseph Ghitis with 29 seconds left. Ghitis finished with two saves as the Mavericks improve to 2-0 on the season.
Pacific Head Coach Ryan Jorden was pleased with his team's effort this weekend, noting "Last year, we didn't have a weekend like this where we were able to play from ahead twice. We still need to grow in our ability to manage those situations, but we are putting ourselves in a solid position. We just have to mature in our ability to close it out."
He continued, "There were contributions from everyone who came on the trip. The freshmen got a great opportunity for some impactful minutes in both games that will aid in their development."
Goldsmith posted two saves for Pacific while Blackmon fired two shots for the Orange and Black.
The Tigers fall to 0-2 on the season and head to Las Vegas next weekend for matches against Utah Valley (Friday, 1 p.m.) and UNLV (Sunday, 1 p.m.).
