Tigers Finalize 2013 Roster
The Colorado College women’s soccer team finalized its 2013 roster with the addition of freshman defender Julia Lauzon and sophomore midfielder Sarah Schweiss, head coach Geoff Bennett announced today.
Lauzon, a product of Surrey, British Columbia, joins older sister Carina, who recently completed her first year at CC.
Schweiss, who hails from Monument, Colo., played one season at TCU.
“Julia brings an element of versatility,” Bennett said of the younger Lauzon. “She could be an outside defender, a central defender or a wide midfielder. Julia likes to be part of the attack. We love outside backs that get forward and she does that naturally.”
Playing for the Surrey United Soccer Club, Lauzon helped the Women’s Premiere Team capture a silver medal at the Canadian National Championships and the U-18 Premier Team claim the Provincial Championship in 2012.
Lauzon also distinguished herself at the prep level, leading Southridge School to the championship at the 2012 Provincial Tournament.
“She’s got good feet, loves to get forward and is very smart,” Bennett said. “Those are the attributes we like in our players. We think she’ll have a very good career at Colorado College.”
Schweiss appeared in 14 games, including 10 as a starter, for the Horned Frogs during the 2012 season. Despite missing seven games due to an injury, she worked her way back into the starting lineup for the final five contests and helped TCU advance to the championship game of the Big 12 tournament.
“Sarah is a very good attacking midfielder who also can play forward,” Bennett said. “Not only is she very smart, she has great feet and great vision. Sarah will boost our offensive production by scoring goals and providing assists.”
In addition to her year of collegiate experience, Schweiss helped the Pride Predators '93 win Colorado club championships in 2006, 2007 and 2010. She also was captain of the Predators '94 squad that claimed the state title in 2011.
“Sarah will have a positive impact on our midfield block,” Bennett said. “That group is very good and she will make it excellent.”
Schweiss was named a High School All-American by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America in 2012 when she led Air Academy High School to the Colorado 4A state championship. She earned first-team all-state and all-Pikes Peak Athletic Conference honors all four years.
“We recruited Sarah hard the first time around,” Bennett said. “We loved her then and we’re thrilled to have her now. We think she is going to have a great three years at Colorado College.”
Lauzon and Schweiss join forward Chanisse Hendrix (Roseville, Calif.), midfielder Meghan Kilkenny (Lone Tree, Colo.) and defender Pele Buika (Wailuku, Hawaii) as incoming freshmen. Junior midfielder Jennifer Stoot (Colorado Springs, Colo.) joined the program early this year after playing one season at Purdue University.
The Tigers return six starters and 19 veterans from last year’s team that posted a 14-4-5 overall record, won a share of its first C-USA regular-season championship with an 8-2-1 mark, and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2006.
Colorado College kicks off the 2013 campaign on Friday, Aug. 23, at the University of Denver on the opening day of the Colorado Cup.
