Tigers Record 2-1 Comeback Win Over CofC
Mt. Pleasant, S.C. – Second-half goals from senior Emily Banes and sophomore Hollie Garber fueled a 2-1 come-from-behind win over the College of Charleston on Sunday afternoon at Patriots Point Athletic Complex.
The Cougars (2-10, 0-2 Colonial Athletic Association (CAA)) scored first and held a 1-0 lead at the break. It marked the sixth time this season Towson has allowed opponents to score first. But the Tigers (7-6-1, 2-2-0 CAA) rallied and posted goals five minutes apart late in the game for the win. Banes’ tally was her 11th season and gave her 69 career points, two shy of setting a school record.
Each team tested the other’s defense early. Towson pressured the Cougars at the start, making runs in behind the back three. College of Charleston sent several speculative balls toward Erin Quinn, and hit the crossbar three times before Michaela Herman teed up a hard strike from about 35 yards that beat Quinn just under the crossbar.
Towson had two good chances right after the break when Banes’ cross from the left trickled directly in front of the net before the Cougars cleared it out. Just a few minutes later Sofia Read’s shot was pushed just wide by Cougar keeper Hope Killian.
Banes took control of the Tiger offense in the 70th minute. She streaked down the left side, got in behind the defense and beat a rushing Killian lower 90 far post to knot the game at 1-1.
Just four minutes later Garber slotted home a shot from about three yards out. Freshman Ariana Rinda sent a corner kick in from the right that bounced off two Tigers before Garber’s first shot zinged off the crossbar. She one-timed the carom for the goal at 73:14.
The Cougars had several late chances clustered together, but the Tiger defense held strong.
Towson heads to Virginia on Thursday, Oct. 10 to face William & Mary at 7 p.m.
