Titan Offense Takes Over in 10-0 Win at Marygrove
BOX SCORE
DETROIT -- The Titans (4-1-0) won their fourth straight with a 10-0 defeat over local rival Marygrove (1-2-0). Detroit opened with four tallies in the first half and followed that with six more in the final frame. Freshman Alyssa Riley (Whitby, ON/Father Leo J. Austin) recorded three goals and an assist to lead the Titans.
“This is the type of game where we're neighbors [with Marygrove] and it's a good relationship between the schools and it gives me an opportunity to play everybody and see what some of the younger players can do,” said women's head coach Mike Lupenec.
Riley scored two of the first three Titan goals breaking through first in the ninth minute. After taking a pass from senior Lauren Roffey (West Bloomfield, MI/West Bloomfield), Riley's shot eluded the Marygrove goalkeeper for the first goal. The second Titan goal came from junior Rebekah Dornbos (Midland, MI/Midland) who made no mistake on her second career penalty kick opportunity. Her other penalty kick goal came in last year's contest against the Mustangs.
Riley added her second goal at 32:37 after receiving a pass from junior Janae Paveglio (Flushing, MI/Flushing) inside the six. Riley then assisted on the next goal after crossing a ball to freshman Alyssa Lotito (Macomb, MI/Eisenhower), who scored for the first time in her collegiate career.
“It's good to see Alyssa [Riley] and Abby get on the score sheet after all their hard work lately. We need to get them rolling and have them finish their chances and they did that today,” added Lupenec.
The second half opened up with sophomore Abby McCollum (La Salle, MI/Monroe) scoring her first two goals of the season to add to her team and Horizon League leading six assists. McCollum now leads the team in points with 11, four points ahead of four of her teammates, and also tying the 11 points she finished with in 2010.
With the score 6-0 and just under 55 minutes into the contest, McCollum added another assist to her Horizon-leading mark this time helping Riley record her third of the game.
Freshman Sam Pierce (Casco, MI/Cardinal Mooney) added the next two goals for Detroit as she timed a cross from junior Mary Leone (St. Clair Shores, MI/Lakeview) perfectly and headed the ball in the net for her first collegiate goal. Her second came less than four minutes later on a shot from just inside the 18-yard box off a pass from senior Alison Suschak (Broadview Heights, OH/Brecksville Broadview Heights) making it 9-0 Detroit.
Suschak would add the final tally of the day finding a loose ball in the box off a corner kick from Dornbos.
Detroit has now outscored its last four opponents 22-1 in the last four contests playing those four games in a stretch of nine days. The 10 goals against Marygrove marks the sixth time a Titan women's soccer team has reached double-digit scoring. The last time was on Oct. 8, 2004 when Cleveland State came to Detroit and fell by a 13-0 score, which stands as the single-game high for team goals in the history of Detroit women's soccer.
Sophomore goalkeeper Emily Oberheim (Springfield, VA/Lee) made three saves for her second straight shutout and third straight win.
“We're only as good as our last game and we need to be ready for the weekend. It's going to be a tough road trip that tests our character but I think our girls are looking forward to it and I think we'll do well as long as we're focused for 90 minutes,” said Lupenec.
Detroit will fly out to Reno, NV this weekend to take part in the Wolf Pack Invitational hosted by the University of Nevada. The Titans will play UNLV Friday at 7:00 p.m. EST, and then Portland State Sunday at 2:00 p.m. EST.
